Fleas, Ticks and Heartworms….Oh My!!!!
As most of my clients know, I suffer from Lyme Disease and other tick borne parasites; because of this I am a boisterous advocate for flea, tick, and heartworm prevention year round. Regardless of what the CDC and local doctors say, we have these diseases here in the Kansas City area and they can be deadly to you and your pets.
My job is to inform you of this threat and do my very best to keep your pets safe and healthy through the warm months of Kansas.
Flea and tick prevention will come in two major categories: topical preventatives and now newer systemic preventatives.
There have always been flea baths but remember, bathing your pet with flea shampoo only kills the fleas on the pet at that time. The next time they walk outside they can get more fleas. The topical products will reside in the fatty layer of the skin and hair and kill the fleas and ticks with contact. Most topical products will last 30 days and the Seresto collar will last for 8 months.
I know that the name brand flea/tick products may seem pricey but the generic versions just don’t work and are a waste of your money. If you buy from a veterinary clinic these products will be guaranteed and most clinics will have rebate coupons you can use.
The newer systemic flea/tick products will last anywhere from one to three months. These are taken orally and work throughout the pet’s body. However, once they take the medicine it cannot be reversed or removed if there is an allergic reaction to it.
The heartworm preventatives protect against heartworm disease and intestinal parasites. There are numerous products on the market that are given orally once a month. There is an injectable form of a heartworm preventative that lasts for 6 months but, again, once it is given you cannot reverse it if there is an allergic reaction to the product.
Navigating through all the products can be overwhelming; but we, the doctors and staff at MAH, are here to help you figure out what is the best product for your pet. Please remember that generic versions are not always best. Only products purchased from veterinary clinics will be guaranteed by the manufacturer, we don’t know where the online pharmacies get their products.
Keeping parasites off and out of your pet will in turn make your family healthier and safer from the diseases they spread! Please call us if you have any further questions.
