For most dog owners, going to the dog park is a fun way to socialize your pet and get in some exercise. However, in order to keep the dog park fun and safe for all visitors, we need to be mindful of proper dog park etiquette. Here are a few suggestions and rules to keep in mind during your visit.
*Never leave your pet unattended and always keep your attention on your dog.
*Always clean up after your dog! Most dog parks have poopbags or scoopers to use for these kind of messes. Parasites are spread via the feces and not every dog may be properly dewormed; so always pick up the poop!
*Make sure your dog is up to date on all vaccinations and has a valid license. Also, we recommend that your pet have flea/tick/heartworm preventatives on board so as to help decrease the spread of diseases.
*Do not take puppies less than 4 months of age to the park; they do not have all of their puppy vaccinations and are at risk for contracting and or spreading diseases.
*Do not bring females who are in season and not spayed. Spayed and or neutered animals are recommended.
*If your dog has behavioral issues (such as dog aggression/becomes unruly or plays rough) please ask the advice of your veterinarian before placing your dog in an overwhelming social situation. You may need to leash your pet and leave immediately if foul play happens.
*Do not take your pet to the park if he/she has just gotten over an illness or injury or is currently showing signs of an illness. Ask your veterinarian when your pet can safely be around others.
*Do not scold or touch someone else’s dog without permission from the owner.
*Pay close attention to the geriatric dogs. They may not be able to play, jump, swim, and or run without experiencing pain or discomfort. Ask your vet for advice on how to keep them comfortable when playing.
*Do not eat while at the dog park. Food wrappers and trash are tempting treats to dogs and can cause problems.
*Follow the rules of the dog park, they are posted for your protection.
