Tips for Buying Exotic Animals
Here at Monticello Animal Hospital we see a wide variety of pets; dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, bunnies, guinea pigs, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, and small rodents. Here are some tips before purchasing or rescuing a pet, especially the exotic kind.
First, please do your research! Do not go to a pet store and get your information and decide within 5 minutes to buy an exotic pet. Remember that the pet store wants to sell and make money from these animals and frequently give out wrong information on the sex, longevity, and diet/care of the pet.
Secondly, make sure you can properly house the exotic pet. Some snakes grow to be very large and require a lot of space; bunnies are very destructive and will tear up carpet and chew on furniture in no time at all; birds need a very controlled environment and structured daily life; reptiles sometimes require an extensive set up; you get my point?
Third, please make sure you can give the same care on day one and throughout the aging process. Most exotics need a very specialized diet and environment. This means you have to maintain these aspects of care day in and day out throughout the life of the pet. This can be time consuming and costly. Oh it seems fun in the beginning but tends to loose the appeal after time goes by.
Finally, call your veterinarian for accurate information on exotic pets before purchasing them and set up a time for yearly exams. If you have questions, please call us at 913-422-0301.
